Theatre Design Progress

The design for the theatre has progressed a lot over the last few weeks, and this week I've been working on the final look of the part of the street it will be on. Currently I'm sketching up the outline so that it can be modelled in 3D so we can start more progress on the street itself. (- Kirstianne)

Initial design, taking on research into 1940s art deco theatres.

2nd more detailed design, playing with shape and refining some details.

Experimentation with colour and light/shadow.

Watercolour concept in preparation for next stage, main colour pallette holds a lot of red tones as this was going to be the colour of the scene at the time.

Next stage: working in digital. Here I added more detail and played with adding splashes of colour.

Using  A Monster in Paris architectural design as reference, I redesigned the theatre as well as the street (the street in Once Upon a Time in America was used as reference) after the Pitch to start pushing the final design of the backgrounds. I am still using details of Art Deco, but not as much.

Playing with colour (acrylic paint).

Currently working on the design of the street for creating a 3D model. This is the first part, I now need to do a side view, and then the other parts of the street.

Trainyard Style Experiment

I've started working with textures behind the scribbles. I think the style I'm going to head for will be to use grungy street textures, using it as a way to portray the gritty times/situation in the story.

Architecture Style

Theatre Re-design
With the design of the buildings, I have been looking at the 'A Monster in Paris' artwork below, paying attention the the structure of the architecture to re-design the theatre I originally did. (- Kirstianne)

Background Sketches

Rough street sketch from reference image.

Having looked at the tomcat toonshader reference picture, I started experimenting with using a more sketchy style for the outlines of the location backgrounds. I used scenes/backgrounds from Once Upon a Time in America and Angels with Dirty Faces as reference as it helped me with visualising, at the moment I'm just trying to create a visual style for the animation so I know what it is that I'm working towards.  (- Kirstianne)

Colour Research

As we are starting at the beginning again in terms of design/style, I'm looking back at the artwork of Romain Jouandeau for inspiration for the backgrounds and colour scheme.

Animation Style Influences

Original Background Concepts

Here are some of the original background concepts I originally created, two were for the original story called 'Weegee', then the last two were created with the new story in mind.

Now that the pitch is over, we have been told that the design style is something that we need to take away and look at again as the character/backgrounds didn't match so these will probably no longer be as relevant as I am going to look at a different approach to the look of our animation.

Originally I had been looking at Art Deco and photographs of New York and Chicago in the 1940s, and I'm still going to continue looking at it, particularly with the theatre in mind, however there will be more influence from the live action films I've been watching. (- Kirstianne)
