Having looked at the tomcat toonshader reference picture, I started experimenting with using a more sketchy style for the outlines of the location backgrounds. I used scenes/backgrounds from Once Upon a Time in America and Angels with Dirty Faces as reference as it helped me with visualising, at the moment I'm just trying to create a visual style for the animation so I know what it is that I'm working towards.
